Twitter Is Getting a Mute Button?

You all know that person that you follow on Twitter that you want to unfollow, but for various reasons, you can’t. Well, Twitter will be introducing a solution to that problem- the mute button. According to The Verge, some users are noticing this new feature on both iOS and Android version of the apps, giving you a way to (finally) silence the accounts of users you follow but don’t want to see in your Timeline. In using this feature, the account you mute will never know of the action (unless they ask if you saw their tweet and catch you in it).

This idea of muting isn’t new, as third-party clients TweetDeck and Tweetbot offer ways to mute accounts as well. However, this will be the first time the feature is included in Twitter’s native app. I personally like the feature, as I don’t want to unfollow a few people for the fear of the “Hey, why did you unfollow me?” conversation thanks to apps that tell you when people unfollow you. On the flip side, I’m sure a few people will use this feature on me during football season.


YouTube Creators Can Now Add a 3-Second Intro to All Their Videos

Finally, YouTube makes a change that is for the better. “YouTubers” can now create and add a 3 second long intro to all of their videos. From Mashable’s article about the news-

To set it up, you need to upload the 3-second introductory video as an unlisted video, and then select “add a channel branding intro” on your channel’s InVideo Programming page. Then you can choose which videos the intro will appear on.

This is a handy feature that saves the extra time of editing an intro into each uploaded video. These intros will start automatically before every video uploaded on that account. YouTube does specify that “the intros may not be used as ads, sponsorships, or product placements — they’re mainly a tool to help you promote your brand.” While I am not much of a YouTube uploader, I appreciate YouTube making a positive change for once. I was getting tired of changes that broke functions of YouTube and having Google+ rammed down my throat.

Snapchat Rolls Out a Major Update

Snapchat, an app that was previously only for photo and video sharing, is now striving to actually implement the “chat” part of its name. In its latest update released on May 1st, Snapchat has added video chat and instant messaging features- as if we didn’t have enough ways to contact each other on our smartphones.

That’s right, you can now text message on Snapchat. Swipe right on one of your friend’s names, and you’ll be presented with a messaging screen that allows you to text that person. These messages will disappear after exiting the messaging screen, however they can be saved by tapping on whatever messages you want to keep.

To use the new video chat feature, when on the messaging screen, if the other person is currently viewing the messaging screen as well, the yellow circle to send a snap picture will change to blue, indicating that you can video chat with the other person. Press and hold this circle, and a circle will appear over your finger showing either the front camera or rear camera, depending on whether your finger is on the top or bottom half of the screen. The other person, if doing the same thing, will appear on the screen.

I tested out the new update earlier today, and I think that it does make Snapchat a more robust app than simply sending snaps and stories. Sending messages and only keeping what you want is very interesting. However I don’t quite understand the video chat feature, why it was created? Isn’t that what FaceTime and/or Skype is for? Not only this, but I attempted to use the new feature with my girlfriend and despite the circle being blue, we only got the video chat to actually work a couple of times from at least 10 attempts. Facebook’s ‘Anonymous Login’ is Evil Genius

One of the things I took away from my social media class this semester is that by using social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and so on, you’re building up data that companies want for various purposes, with advertising being the main intention. Facebook has been the king of this, especially with all of the third-party apps that have grown increasingly in number the past few years. Mark Zuckerberg, realizing that Facebook has gotten the reputation of a personal information vacuum, announced yesterday at f8 that Facebook will be including an “anonymous login” option.

This term has been put in quotes, because it’s not truly anonymous. How could a login be completely anonymous anyway? That’s a contradictory statement, but I digress.  This new feature allows the user to choose the “anonymous login” option instead of the regular “login with Facebook” button present on all kinds of websites and third-party apps. By using this option, the app or service will not receive any information about the user. However, Facebook still verifies it’s the user, gets the basics of what it that’s being done, what app is being logged into this time, and how often that app has been logged into, which it gets to combine with all the other data it has on that user.

This is a good move by Zuckerberg and Facebook because it helps to change the image that Facebook is all about getting your personal data. (Even though in reality, despite this new login option, it still is) Along with this, it removes the headache of deciding what apps to give your information to, or accidentally clicking “okay” instead of “skip” when it comes to allow an app to post for you. Lastly, Facebook now has even more information to itself to sell to developers and advertisers, instead of the apps getting it directly. These reasons thus make Zuckerberg an evil genius because no less information is being hidden in the grand scheme of things, and Facebook will make more money while simultaneously making its users happier.

Another Security Flaw Gets the Heartbleed Treatment, But Don’t Believe the Hype

Another week, and seemingly another new internet security flaw has been reported. Well, I guess we all need to change our passwords again because of this newest flaw, “Covert Redirect,” right? However, unlike the Heartbleed bug, this one isn’t actually much of a problem. (Don’t actually go change your passwords)

Wang Jing, a Ph.D student from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore is credited with “discovering” Covert Redirect, along with creating its website and logo. He found a vulnerability in the OAuth framework that powers the identity logins for services such as Facebook, Microsoft, Google and LinkedIn. This vulnerability lies in the way that Facebook, or YouTube, for example, has implemented this framework to their own needs. (It isn’t clear yet who’s implementation either does or doesn’t contain this vulnerability) In this flaw, it is possible to hijack login credentials by redirecting the credentials from the intended target, such as Facebook, to the malicious site. However, (using the known example of Facebook) this is only possible after a user clicks on a link or visits a malicious website, and then, not only does the user have to click on a malicious link, they have to then click on a Facebook login button and agree to authorize the login and release of information. Essentially, you have to be completely unaware that you’re on a bad site, which you should always be aware of, but not only this, you have to authorize the release of info in the pop up box as well. Therefore, this vulnerability is nowhere near the same level as Heartbleed and should not be recognized as such.

Really, what this comes down to is someone attempting to profit and make a name for themselves off of a minor vulnerability by giving it a fancy name, website, and logo like Heartbleed did. Despite what major news outlets such as cnet are reporting, the problem does not lie in the OpenID and OAuth frameworks. It lies in the implementation that services such as Facebook created, and therefore is not as big of an issue. Don’t get me wrong, this is still an issue that needs fixing ASAP, but this is not the next Heartbleed.

This type of flaw is not new, there have been other ways in the past for malicious links and sites to redirect login information away from the intended sites. The best way to protect yourself is just to be aware of where you are on the internet at all times, be careful of what you click on, and ALWAYS pay attention to login pages and confirmations. Despite this being being a minor flaw, I hope that internet security flaws will stop becoming weekly news.

Athletes and Social Media: The Double-Edged Sword

Adam Schefter, ESPN, Jason La Canfora, CBS, and many other sports reporters and media outlets alike depend on social media to get their daily news and stories. 5 years ago, this wasn’t the case at all, as the sports media depended solely on “inside sources” to report on breaking news. Nowadays, we see daily that news stems from directly from a sports personality such as an athlete. Most of the time, the news gained from their personal social media accounts is positive or at least neutral, such as a player confirming themselves that he or she signed with a new team. During the National Football League (NFL) free agency period in March, quite a few reports of signings came directly from the player’s social media account, usually Twitter. There are many other benefits stemming from athletes having social media accounts such as free self-promotion, interacting with fans, and so on. However, athletes don’t always use social media to their or their team’s benefit. There have been many instances of negative news stemming from an athlete’s social media account. In some cases, these instances were a major part of the demise of the athlete’s career. I will examine both sides of the argument- why athletes’ social media usage is positive or negative, by looking at previous history, news, and cases. In addition to this, I wish to examine the rightfulness of teams restricting or banning athletes’ use of social media. From this, I hope to form a conclusion as to whether or not athletes should be active on social media.

The Negatives

We’ll first start with the argument that social media usage harms an athlete or their team more than it helps. As mentioned, there have been many cases of social media posts leading to harmful effects on the individual or their respective team. One such case would be the story of Will Hill, a defensive back for the New York Giants of the NFL. In an article written for Sports Illustrated, Michael McKnight discusses Hill’s Twitter history in 2010 that played a major part in the Florida Gator going undrafted and unsigned. Hill’s tweets were about his “large sexual appetite, an affinity for “sour” (pungent marijuana), unfiltered restaurant reviews, and blunt medical queries.” McKnight continues, “Just as Hill was declaring early for the NFL draft, his tweets were confirming rumors that, although talented enough to start for the Gators, he was less interested in this Cover 2 than this one.” Questions of off-field behavior and commitment to the game of football ultimately led to Hill not joining an NFL team after leaving college early. He spent a year in the Arena Football League, and got a tryout with the Giants a year after going undrafted. He ended up making the team and is still on the roster today, but Will Hill’s Twitter usage made his path to the NFL much harder than it had to be and could have ended his career before it even started.

Another case of social media harming an athlete’s career would be the developing story of quarterback Chad Kelly, nephew of Buffalo Bills great Jim Kelly. Chad, who I knew of in high school when he played at a rival high school of mine, has had a history of getting in trouble with his school and team. In high school, after starting as a freshman, he was suspended the last seven games of that season. His sophomore year, after starting five games, Kelly was suspended indefinitely from the team. While social media was not the cause of his suspension, he continued this pattern of behavior when Twitter became popular. After winning a state championship in New York, Kelly wrote and posted two rap songs about himself. (If you want to suffer through them, regretfully click here and here.) Once Chad committed to Clemson in early 2012, he immediately took to Twitter to call out Clemson QB Cole Stoudt, tweeting “Your on the bench of a reason. And i come soon! Just letting you know.” Kelly continued in subsequent tweets explaining how the coaches should prefer him because of his ability to run and throw, and saying Stoudt lacked the “oomph” to push starter Tajh Boyd in practice. Stoudt then responded, with his own tweet saying “I hate those that talk like their the (bleep) when they haven’t done anything yet.” Kelly, of course, responded saying “I’m coming to Clemson to Play my Freshman year I ain’t going just to sit on the bench” and “Everyday im coming to work and be the best!” Bad spelling, grammar, and punctuation aside, Kelly’s Twitter fiasco gave him a negative reputation in the eyes of many college football fans before he even enrolled at Clemson. A couple of weeks ago, Kelly was dismissed from the Clemson football team, partly due to his verbal arguments with coaches on the sidelines, and partly due to his negative social media presence. These are two of the more extreme examples of social media hurting an athlete’s career, but that doesn’t mean that lesser offenses can’t harm a career. In an article from USA Today, Nicole Auerbach explains what Virginia Commonwealth athletic director Ed McLaughlin and his staff lookout for. “McLaughlin and his staff are mostly worried about obvious no-nos, like photos of underage athletes drinking. With more minor transgressions – such as tweeting something they probably shouldn’t have in the heat of the moment after a game – McLaughlin said VCU deals with them on a case-by-case basis to hopefully catch the mistake quickly and not let it turn into something bigger.” McLaughlin says, “We tell them all the time when you put something on the Internet, it is forever.” He continues, “We try to stress the things that could be inappropriate, things that could be harmful or embarrassing for you, your family or your team. We try to stress those things and teach them about them so when they get in the working world they don’t make a tragic mistake that’s really, really going to hurt them.” These things that McLaughlin looks out for daily happen all the time across the sports world, whether collegiate or professional. While these offenses aren’t as serious as the stories of Will Hill or Chad Kelly, they can still have a negative impact on an athlete or their team.

The Positives

So, if social media has all of these pitfalls, and using it incorrectly can put a major dent in an athlete’s career, why even bother using it in the first place? It’s simple; there are still many good reasons for an athlete to be active on social media. Michael Gaio of Athletic Business writes about a seminar from Edgewood College director of athletic communications David Petroff. He gives 5 examples of positive things that athletes should do on social media-

  1. Say thank you. This is always a good option. Teach student-athletes to take time to thank those who support them. Fans, teammates and family for example.
  2. Support others. Student-athletes can provide a positive example for other students by sending positive messages about their peers in other sports or activities at school.
  3. Share news and humor. Social media is meant to be fun. Join in conversations and share things you find interesting or entertaining.
  4. Engage in discussion with those you admire. Petroff discussed how prior to social media, it was difficult to interact or even hear from famous people that student-athletes admire. But now, they can follow them on Twitter and learn what they’re talking about and even interact with them.
  5. Post anything consistent with your personal brand. Again, how do you want to present yourself in public?

Social media can be used by athletes as a free tool for positive publicity, support, and promotion. For example, this is what @LVCathletics is all about. The best Twitter account out of all teams in the MAC in terms of number of followers, The LVC athletics account tweets daily about LVC sports events, such as an upcoming game or match, with details of location and time. They tweet about news regarding LVC athletes, such as someone winning a player of the week award. The account also retweets athletes that have good things to say, such as members of the football team (including me) on the day that we got our championship rings.

I mention the LVC athletics account because it follows the above suggestions from David Petroff. If athletes, and not just those here at LVC, are following the model set by Petroff and LVC athletics, for example, then those athletes are going to see the positive returns from social media. Part of the football team’s popularity this past season, apart from winning the championship itself, stemmed from fans being able to follow the team’s progress easily through social media. By the end of the year, we had so many people interested in LVC football to a point that the football team has probably never seen before, thanks to the promotion on social media.

In addition to social media being a positive for the athletes and teams themselves, as mentioned, social media has become an integral part of sports reporting. I’m not sure that ESPN, its reporters, and other sports news outlets alike could survive today if social media just disappeared. David Just, a sports reporter for the Dallas Morning News, spoke with Trevor Bell of Texas Tech University about how social media has impacted sports reporting. ”For the media, social media makes it easier in a way because athletes can self report and can get whatever messages they want out to the public, without relying on us,” Just said. “Journalists no longer need to break news as much because athletes break it themselves on Twitter. For example, high school athletes who are ‘addicted’ to Twitter will announce which school they are committing to through this platform.”

This doesn’t apply to just high school athletes, collegiate and professional athletes take to social media to announce news first hand as well. During the NFL free agency period in March, many breaking news stories developed from a tweet from a player that signed to a new team, or in some cases, a player confirming that they did not sign yet despite rumors and reports. We did not see a level of direct interaction with the entire sports world so quickly until social media came about. 5-10 years ago, all sports reporting was done through “inside sources” and team reports. Now, most breaking news stories are reported and seen on Twitter before they make it to TV, Radio, and other mediums. For example, Ryan Clark, (@Realrclark25) the recently signed safety for the Washington Redskins, reported his signing with the team through his Twitter account, before any other news outlet or Twitter account reported it. Players can also use their social media accounts to announce new products, promotions, sponsorships, and etc. Recently, Robert Griffin III, quarterback for the Washington Redskins, revealed a new logo for his sponsor Adidas on his Instagram. Athletes, fans, and media can all benefit from proper social media usage and that’s why we see so many athletes today on social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Banning Social Media?

When it comes to professional sports teams, most organizations simply frown and deal with it after one of their players causes a problem on a social media platform. Some organizations implement a social media monitoring system that will alert a team if one of their players is tweeting something that is flagged in the system, such as one of many keywords in the topics of sex, drugs, alcohol, violence and race. However, as Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes, these professional organizations do not simply “ban tweeting while games are being played and for a period of time before and after games. They do not ban social media altogether, mostly because Twitter and Facebook postings are protected by the First Amendment.” Some universities and colleges, however, have taken a different stance. Some institutions have a strict ban on in-season social media usage. Fittipaldo says, “Boise State football coach Chris Peterson and New Mexico State football coach DeWayne Walker ban their players from using Twitter in-season. So does former Missouri basketball coach Mike Anderson and Mississippi State basketball coach Rick Stansbury.”

So, why do institutions ban social media anyway? Marcus Hauer, in an article for the Vermont Law Review Journal, reveals motivations from a couple different head football coaches. Turner Gill, the former head football coach for the Kansas Jayhawks, explains, “The reason we decided to not allow our players to have a Twitter account is we feel like it will prevent us from being able to prepare our football program to move forward. Simple as that.” Steve Spurrier, head football coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, explains in reference to an incident where a tweet was posted about a player getting arrested following a fight, though the claims were false, “Well, we have some dumb, immature players that put crap on their Twitter, and we don’t need that. So the best thing to do is just ban it.”

The question is, is this practice rightful, ethical, or even constitutional? Mary Lou Santovec writes in an article on the issue that “administrators can run headlong into both the NCAA and the First Amendment. As a private group, the NCAA may make rules that are unenforceable at public schools.” She continues, “Public schools must follow the constitutional protections of due process, prevent unreasonable searches and support free speech and free association. Private schools often extend “Constitution-like rights to students through policies and handbook language that may rise to the level of contracts,” said Janet Judge, a sports attorney and president of Sports Law Associates LLC in Cumberland, ME. But they’re not bound by the Constitution.” Thus, essentially, private schools have more freedom to do what they want it comes to their social media policies, but public schools can put bans into effect when “they are seen as reasonable and specific. They must be narrowly tailored to serve a school’s “legitimate, content neutral interests,” according to Judge.” The NCAA doesn’t get involved in social media policies either way, however.

Going back to Mr. Hauer, he argues that these social media bans are unconstitutional because they violate the First Amendment, and for four main reasons (you can read the full arguments of these points in the article, I won’t discuss them here to save space)-

  1. Tinker and the Current Supreme Court Jurisprudence of Public School Restrictions on Student Speech (pg. 421)
  2. College Students Are Likely Granted Greater Speech Protection Than High School Students (pg. 422)
  3. Student-Athletes May Receive Less Constitutional Protection than Non-Athletes (pg. 423)
  4. Social Media Posts Are Not On-Campus Speech When Made Off School Grounds by Students Not Participating in School-Related Activities (pg. 427)


After examining the negatives and positives of athletes maintain social media pages, whether of high school, collegiate, or professional level, and the rightfulness and constitutionality of social media bans by universities and colleges, I come to the conclusion that athletes should be allowed to have any social media account that they want. To me, there are more positives in having social media than there are negatives. These athletes should not have have season long bans imposed on them, as they will probably be ruled unconstitutional in the future, as they violate the First Amendment, as argued by Marcus Hauer. Just because some select few made some bad decisions, doesn’t mean that an entire team should be punished for a season’s length. That being said, the ban of tweeting during games and matches and a set amount of time before and after is still appropriate to reduce the amount of emotion filled tweets that are regretted the next day.

The main problem with athletes and social media in my opinion, especially at the high school and collegiate levels, is that the athletes are not educated enough about the pitfalls and dangers of social media. These individuals do not realize that their misjudgment on social media can have serious consequences on not only themselves, but their teams, schools, and organizations. Schools need educate their athletes about how to properly use social media, perhaps through a seminar similar to David Petroff’s. They need to use previous real-world examples, such as Will Hill or Chad Kelly, to really drive home the possible severity of irresponsible social media use. Education is the solution and key to maximizing social media usage by athletes, not outright bans.

There have been many, many bad video game controllers. The N64 boomerang looking thing, the Atari Jaguar and 5200 controllers, and the Intellivision Disk controller (pictured above, I mean I don’t even know how the hell that was supposed to be a controller. It looks like a phone) just to name a few. There were many others in the 80’s and early 90’s as well. By the mid 90’s, most video game companies figured out how to make a good controller, and there has been very few bad controllers since then. However, there is an exception to this rule, and it’s the original Microsoft Xbox controller.

This thing is MASSIVE. Before you even begin to attempt to use and press the buttons, the physical constraint of barely being able to wrap your hands around the controller is evident. Good luck trying to press the select and start buttons. Not only this, but the button placement was just plain weird, and didn’t fit the mental model of what other controllers at the time were doing, such as the PlayStation 2 and GameCube controllers. The original Xbox used the “white” and “black” buttons that were placed above the the A, B, X, and Y buttons (the colored ones). These buttons were just strange and didn’t work well and thankfully were not continued on the Xbox 360. Not only that, but those 4 letter buttons just mentioned were placed in a weird angled diamond shape that was hard to get used to.

Another main issue was the convex right analog stick. Why make the left stick concave, which is the preferred style, and the other convex? The right stick made it hard to keep your thumb from sliding off. Lastly, why the hell is the Xbox logo in the middle so damn big? Perhaps, if you forgot that you were playing an Xbox, Microsoft wanted to make sure that you knew every single time you looked down at that massive controller. So, how did Microsoft fix this glaring issue with their first entry in the console market? They released a new controller not too long after the original that was much smaller, which can be seen in the above video. That controller wasn’t perfect, but the remaining issues, such as the white and black buttons, were fixed with one of the best gaming controllers ever, the Xbox 360’s controller. All of the above problems were fixed, and the 360’s controller was one of the reasons why that console did so well in that generation of consoles. Hopefully the original Xbox controller will be the last truly bad controller in the gaming world.

USB connectors suck. Daily, I find myself attempting to insert a USB cable or drive into a slot incorrectly because I have it upside down. It’s not like these connectors are new, so why haven’t design changes happened yet? A reason for this is usually a lack of a signifier to indicate which side is up. Adding to this problem is the fact that most of the time, you cannot see the USB that you are trying to insert into well. This could be because the port is located on the side of a laptop, or on a desktop in such a way that it is hard to see the port without putting your face in front of it. The constraint of only being able to insert the connector into the port one way is the main issue. It could even lead to damaging the connector or port. So the solution is simple- make reversible USB  connectors and ports, and all of these issues are solved. I am surprised that it has not happened yet, considering that USB has been around for a while.

However, it is coming in the near future! USB connector Type-C is expected to be finalized in July of this year and will be added to new USB 3.1 specification. So, within a couple years, these usability problems will be fixed! Read about it here.

Manual, or standard, transmission cars are an example of less than ideal usability. They exist because there was a time when manually shifting gears in an automobile was the only choice. However, manual transmissions are still offered today because they are cheaper than an automatic transmission, they can give better gas mileage than an automatic, and for sporty or performance cars, they are just plain fun.

My car has a 5 speed manual transmission, and I enjoy driving it in pretty much all situations except for heavy traffic. In heavy stop and go traffic, I have to constantly shift into and out of 1st gear, and repeatedly use my clutch. I cannot simply just let off the brake and give it a little bit of gas like in an automatic. I would consider this a constraint that leads to unnecessary wear on the transmission parts.

Also, someone who is not familiar with manual transmissions cannot simply hop into my car and drive it with ease. In an ideal, usable world, anyone who has a license should be able to hop into an automobile and drive it. Thus, for those that only know how to drive an automatic transmission, manual transmissions do not fit their mental model.

To fix this issue, automotive manufacturers should begin to phase out manual transmissions and replace them with semi-automatic transmissions. Semi-automatic means that control of shifting gears is still the responsibility of the driver, but there is no clutch, or h-pattern shifter to worry about. Usually, there are paddles on the steering wheel or a sequential shifter on the console. This is the ideal setup for those who want ease of use but want to remain in control of the transmission. Many performance and exotic cars nowadays use this setup (pictured below).

I’m not a left-handed writer, but why are there seemingly only right-handed desks here at LVC (and probably most other schools as well)? I know quite a few people that write left-handed and have to unfairly attempt to adapt the right-handed desks. These right-handed desks present a physical constraint to left-handed writers because there is no armrest on the left side to keep the writer’s arm comfortable. A left-handed writer must physically adjust their body to uncomfortable write on the desk. These desks, whether right-handed or left-handed, are an example of affordance in that they indicated what hand the desk is designed to be written on with. How do you fix this issue for the left-handed writers out there? Simple. Get more left-handed desks.
